Federal Interagency Holocaust Remembrance Program

This year’s on-line program will feature Holocaust survivor Dr. Eugene Bergman. Dr. Bergman and his family endured the dangers and depravations of three ghettos during the Holocaust. In addition, as a child Dr. Bergman  was playing in the street when a German soldier struck him in the head with a rifle butt, rendering him deaf. Despite this permanent injury Dr. Bergman was not silenced including his book Survival Artist: A Memoir of the Holocaust. This annual forum is free to the public and no registration is required. The program will be live streamed at HolocaustRemembrance.org.

Food Justice DMV 5th Birthday Benefit

Food Justice DMV, born in the fire of the pandemic, turns 5 🥳! To celebrate our 1.2 million (and counting) deliveries to migrant families, the one-and-only Bishop Mariann Budde joins us. The world stopped and witnessed a heroic act when she made a legendary plea for mercy and compassion. She will open up for us during for a rare, unscripted conversation with Rev. Nilse Furtado-Gilliam, associate pastor at Clarendon United Methodist Church.

Many have wondered what Bishop Budde’s life is like since her tectonic-plates shifting plea; what she has learned about faith, bravery, and power; and how her prescient book, “How We Learn to Be Brave,” informed her choices. Bishop Budde has been a supporter of Food Justice DMV since our early days and continues her backing with this appearance taking place at Sidwell Friends School.

We asked Bishop Budde about her vision for the event and she said it MUST include joy and music 🎶🌍! The musical group Son Cosita Seria brings both with their “son jarocho” style música. This sound originated in Vera Cruz, Mexico, and whips together dynamic influences from Indigenous cultures, Africa, and Spain. Be prepared to be dazzled by their “zapateado” – a rapid-fire percussive, rhythmic, riveting dance done on a wooden plank called the “tarima.” We swoon when they sing, and once again feature them, as a statement of their vast dedication to migrant justice:

Because we are a volunteer collective, every centavo from your ticket price goes to purchasing food 🥕, diapers, formula, and more for migrant families under attack.

We cannot wait to 🪅 celebrate 🪅 with you!

Your support for migrant families is needed now more than ever 🫶!
