Haftam Yazhak Heathwood was born into a Jewish family in Ethiopia during a period of civil war and famine. At age three, she fled with her family to Israel and settled in Beit She’an.
After graduating from high school and serving two years in an IDF medical unit, she followed her dream of moving to the United States. After arriving in New York in 2011, she earned her degrees from City College in childhood education and psychology. She has also served with a variety of nonprofit organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors for the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York.
