Bella Abzug, with her signature hats and Bronx swagger, inspired a generation of woman and yet has largely been forgotten. Barreling into the U.S. House in 1970, she fought against the Vietnam War, shepherded bills that enabled women to obtain credit cards in their own names and use “Ms.” in official documents, and became an early advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Bella’s childhood in a devout Orthodox Jewish family influenced her battles for equality for women and for human rights for all. Bella! offers both inspiration for action in today’s troubled times and a delightful dose of nostalgia.
Filmmaker Jeff L. Lieberman will join us virtually for a conversation about Bella! after the screening.
