The Fund for the Community
is on hold at this time.
No grants will be given
in 2010.
Purpose of the Fund
The purpose of The Fund (“The Fund”)
is to: (i) strengthen community by providing resources to address needs in and
help solve problems in the communities served by the Temple; (ii) increase the
involvement of the Temple and Temple congregants in the communities served by
the Temple; (iii) serve as a catalyst for social change; and (iv) exemplify
Tikkun Olam.
We believe we are responsible as Jews
and as individuals to participate in meeting pressing needs in our community and
to help to build capacity in other organizations and individuals to meet these
needs in the future. While we may not be able to solve all of the social
problems in the world, we can become active supporters of those attempting to
create better lives for vulnerable people by providing both financial support
and technical assistance.
What is Tikkun Olam?
Tikkun Olam is Hebrew for “repairing the world.” In
modern times, it has come to denote activities undertaken by or with Jewish
communities to promote social action and social justice. In the context of The
Fund, it refers to activities involving the active cooperation of members of
Temple Rodef Shalom and other community organizations, regardless of religious
or other affiliation, who share Temple Rodef Shalom’s commitment to working
together to address all forms of injustice and misunderstanding that affect the
communities in which our Temple members live.
Activities
The Fund will make grants to not-for-profit
organizations to help the grantee organizations build capacity, leadership
skills and experience that it can apply to developing new programs, funding
sources, members, and partnerships embodying the principles of the concept of
Tikkun Olam. Funds from The Fund shall not be used to support ongoing programs
of the grantee organizations.
All grants from The Fund will be made in
response to written proposals that are submitted to The Fund by eligible
organizations in conformity with Temple Rodef Shalom Fund for the Community’s
published guidelines, which are contained herein, and which are reviewed and
approved by the Fund Advisory Committee.
When The Fund makes a grant, it will also
appoint a Liaison Representative to the grantee organization. The Liaison
Representative will serve in this capacity without compensation. Additional
members of Temple Rodef Shalom may volunteer their time to assist the grantee.
Upon completion of the grant, the grantee
organization, together with the Liaison Representative, will submit a 1-2 page
report to the Temple Rodef Shalom Community Fund Advisory Committee describing
the grant’s impact.
