Advocates for coal say that America cannot afford to turn its back on this cheap
and abundant fuel. Opponents respond that the environmental costs—including
mountaintop removal mining and accelerated climate change—are too high to pay.
The debate is heating up in Virginia, where Dominion Power is seeking approval
for a massive new coal-fired plant in Wise Country. Many religious groups oppose
the plant. This lively forum, moderated by Washington Post energy correspondent
Steven Mufson, will look at both sides of the issue.
